Quantitative Speciation of Mn-Bearing Particulates Emitted from Autos Burning [Methylcyclopentadienyl]manganese Tricarbonyl-Added Gasolines Using Xanes Spectroscopy
Article Abstract:
XAFS [X-ray absorption fine structure] spectroscopy is a superior method for chemical analysis of particulate materials[PM] when samples are low in concentration and/or sample size. New PM standards proposed by the EPA require a technology other than X-ray diffraction. XAFS also is capable of determining quantities in multicomponent systems. In this study 3 species of manganese[Mn] were quantified in samples of manganese enriched gasoline emissions. Applying a principal component analysis algorithm and using the least-squares fitting procedure the species were identified and weights assigned. XAFS can be an accurate and efficient tool in PM sample analysis, developing health knowledge and setting EPA measures and standards.

Isotopic Studies of Sources of Uranium in Sediments of the Ashtabula River, Ohio, USA
Article Abstract:
Uranium contamination of the sediments of the Ashtabula River of Ohio can be traced to two sources. The isotopic methods used in this study include removing sediment cores via copper tubing, samples dissolved by fusion with KOH, qualitative ICP mass spectral scans, and spectrometry using an HPGe detector. Two source scenarios were created based upon Thorium 232 and Thorium 230 atom ratios. Anthropogenic uranium data is apportioned between two firms, one which extruded uranium 235, depleted and enriched, and another source which processed ore containing naturally occurring radionuclides. This study using ICP mass spectral scans provides a method of linking anthropogenic uranium, its daughters and related trace elements to transport origins.
